Desfile de faroles

Lydia is very proud of her gnome house lantern. The gnome’s skirt features the colors of the Costa Rican flag and her shirt says ‘Costa Rica.’

The lantern parade (Desfile de Faroles) is an old tradition in Costa Rica that brings children, parents, teachers and families together on September 14th, the eve of Independence Day. The lanterns often highlight national symbols and feature the colors of the Costa Rican flag. At 6 pm, lanterns are lit all over the country, the National Anthem is sung and people parade through the streets, often accompanied by school bands.

They were very keen to walk with their new friends!
