Pipa fría

Dave and I had our first surf lesson today. We learned at Playa Grande and had a really good teacher named Vidier. No pics because the phone stayed in the car. We both managed to pop up and stay up several times. 🌊

We did indulge in some pipa fría after our lesson. A young coconut is called a “pipa” in Costa Rica. You can find people selling cold coconut water on the side of the road or from carts or coolers on the beaches. Fresh coconut water is full of electrolytes, calcium, magnesium and potassium so is great for rehydrating.

The guy at this particular fruit stand had some serious machete skills. Those tops are lopped off to perfection with just a thin layer of coconut to poke through. So good!

Eddy has some serious machete skills too. I would not be confident whacking away with my hand so close! He was really nice and agreed to open the coconut for me so I could eat the meat. We thought about getting our own machete for this purpose but decided that might not be the best idea.
